Days 1-10: Around the Crimean Peninsula

Begin in Yevpatoria, admiring the sanctuaries of three faiths – Orthodox, Muslim and Karaite Jewish. Explore Kerch, on the easternmost tip of Crimea. Inspect the palace of the Crimean khans, the last descendants of Genghis Khan’s hordes in the Western world, and enjoy a boat ride on sunny Sevastopol Bay, home to the Black Sea Fleet. Explore Balaklava, a fishing village near the site of the battle that inspired Tennyson’s Charge of the Light Brigade.

Visit UNESCO-listed Chersonesus, where ancient Greeks built the only known Greek theater in the Black Sea region, and the Tsarskii Kurgan, the 4th century BC grave of a Bosporan king. Savor the czars’ favorite wines at Massandra Winery and discover Yalta’s historic sites, including Livadia Palace, where Roosevelt, Churchill and Stalin carved up Europe in 1945.
